Dr. D. L. Deadwyler, Pinned Under Car, Dies Before Reaching Athens Hospital.
Dr. D. L. Deadwyler, prominent physician of Carlton, Ga., was almost instantly killed at an early hour Saturday night in an auto collision about three miles from Athens on the Winterville road.
Dr. Deadwyler and his son, D. L. Jr., were returning to their home at Carlton when the accident occurred. Young Deadwyler who was driving the Ford coupe in which he and his father were riding was unhurt save for minor scratches and bruises. He stated Saturday night that so far as he knew the accident was unavoidable. He said that his car was approached by another Ford coupe traveling in the opposite direction and that just as the two cards seemed to be abreast and clear of each other, they struck, the left front wheel of both cars being locked together and the Deadwyler car turning over on its right side. Dr. Deadwyler who had either jumped through or fallen from the open window of the coupe, was pinned under the heavy top.
The dead man was pinned to the ground with the weight of the coupe top resting on his breast and body. He was badly cut about the body by the broken glass from the coupe window and his head struck the ground in falling rendering him unconscious, but after first aid had been administered, he was sufficiently revived, it is said, to converse a little with those who were working over him, among whom was his son.
A [_?_] down Ford passing a minute after the injured man had been extricated from the overturned car, rushed with him to Athens, but he died before reaching the hospital.
The two men, Stein and Burts, who are said to have been riding in the other car, were unhurt according to advices Saturday night. They are reported to have offered their utmost effort in attending the injured man, but could not bring him to Athens as both cars were virtually demolished. They could not be located by newspaper men after the accident.
Mr. Deadwyler had driven to Athens Saturday to carry his son home for the week-end. Young Deadwyler is a well-known and popular student at the University of Georgia and a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He is a sophomore in college.
Mrs. Deadwyler who is spending the winter in Florida was located over long distance soon after the accident and is now on her way to Athens, together with her two younger sons who were with her. A daughter of the dead man lives at Carlton.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later, pending the arrival of Mrs. Deadwyler from Florida. The remains are at Dor[_?_] Undertaking Parlors.
